Data Deletion

You have the right to delete your Chakula account and the personal data associated with it. This page explains what gets deleted, what we must retain, and how to submit a deletion request.
What Gets Deleted
When you request account deletion, we will permanently remove:
- Your account credentials (email address, hashed password).
- Your profile information (name, age, height, weight, dietary preferences).
- All meal logs, nutrition history, and food diaries you have recorded.
- Recipes and community content you have posted (unless others have saved a copy — see below).
- Saved recipes and favourites.
- In-app messages and support history linked to your account.
Note on community content: If other users have saved or remixed a recipe you posted, the remixed version belongs to them and will remain. Your authorship attribution will be removed and replaced with "Deleted User".
What We Must Retain
Certain data must be retained after deletion to comply with legal obligations:
- Transaction records — if you made a purchase, billing records are retained for up to 7 years as required by Kenyan tax law. These records contain only the transaction amount and date, not your nutritional data.
- Abuse / safety logs — if your account was involved in a reported safety incident, relevant records may be retained for up to 2 years to investigate and prevent further harm.
- Anonymised analytics — aggregated usage data that cannot identify you may be retained indefinitely.
Deletion Timeline
- We will acknowledge your request within 3 business days.
- Account access will be revoked immediately upon confirmation.
- Personal data will be fully deleted or anonymised within 30 days of your confirmed request.
- Backups are purged on a rolling 30-day cycle — your data will be removed from backups within 60 days of the request.
How to Request Deletion
Option 1 — In the App (Fastest)
- Open Chakula and go to Profile → Settings.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Delete Account and confirm.
Your account will be scheduled for deletion immediately.
Option 2 — By Email
Send an email to hello@chakula.app with the subject line "Account Deletion Request" and include:
- The email address associated with your account.
- A brief statement that you wish to delete your account and all associated data.
We may ask you to verify your identity before processing the request to protect against unauthorised deletion attempts.
Data Portability
Before deleting your account, you can request a copy of your data by emailing hello@chakula.app with the subject "Data Export Request". We will provide your data in a machine-readable format (JSON or CSV) within 14 days.
